Residents of two far-flung barangays in the town of Janiuay will soon become lighted after the Department of Energy (DOE) released P4.08 million check as subsidy for the establishment of a hydro-electrification project with a power capacity of 40 kilowatt The cheque was turned over by DOE Secretary Angelo Reyes to Janiuay Councilor Atty. Michael Margarico and Engr. Bert Dalusung of the Preferred Energy Incorporated (PEI). The PEI, a non-government organization, is the project proponent. Dalusung, a member of the PEI's board, said the total cost of the project is P10.7 million. The subsidy will be used for transmission and distribution system. The Finnish Embassy, on the other hand, contributed P2.99 million for the micro-hydro component while the local government extended P1.9 million. The community, on the other hand, takes charge of the civil works as their counterpart for the establishment of the hydro-plant. The source of energy will be taken from Malbog River, which is near the recipient barangays Canauilan and Barasalon. Canauilan and Barasalon are two of the three remote barangays in Janiuay. It takes more than two hours of walk before one can reach the area. The PEI has conducted a feasibility study on the project while the local government is convinced of the potential of Malbog River to provide power to some 451 households, said Dalusung.
